Help Mateo reach Rome — time is running out

My name is Nadia. I’m 28 years old. I live in Casablanca with my son, Mateo, who is eighteen months old.

Mateo is sick.

He suffers from a rare neurological disease that attacks his muscles, slowly, methodically, relentlessly. His arms. His legs. And for the past few weeks, the muscles that allow him to swallow. This morning, he struggled to finish his bottle. He coughed. He still managed to smile afterward. I don’t know how he does it. Some evenings, I just can’t.

The Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome has agreed to take him on as part of an experimental protocol. The neurologist wrote to me in French, awkwardly, using simple words. She told me he’s still within the therapeutic window. That this window is closing. That every week counts.

I reread that sentence every day.

Every week counts. But for me, every week also means rent, diapers, medication, and appointments here in Casablanca. And now I have to add plane tickets, the visa, accommodation in Rome for the duration of the treatment, and medical expenses that nothing will cover.

I'm alone. Mateo's father no longer answers my messages.

My mother calls me every night. She talks about the weather, the neighbor, what she ate. She doesn't know what else to say. Neither do I. So I listen to her voice, and it helps me get through the night.

I created this fundraiser because I have no other option.

We have €20,000. We need €2,500,000.

I know what that number represents. I know you don't know me. I know you have your own lives, your own struggles. I'm not asking you to solve everything.

I'm just asking you to share. That's all.

Perhaps this page will reach someone who can do something. Perhaps by sharing it, you will be the link that changes everything. I have no certainty. But I have nothing else to do tonight but hope that good people exist somewhere on the other side of this screen.

Mateo loves pigeons. Since he was eight months old, he has held out his finger to them from the window. He loves light-up pens. Tonight, he placed his little hand on my cheek, as if he wanted to tell me that everything was going to be alright.

I want him to have the chance to grow up.

I want him to discover other things to love. Books, the sea, people. I want him to learn to run, to fall, to get back up. I want him to be too big for me to carry one day, and for that to be an ordinary problem, a problem of a happy mother.

For now, we have to go to Rome first.

Thank you for reading this far. Thank you for every donation, every share, every message. You will never truly know what it means to receive help from someone you will never meet, who had no reason to help, and who did it anyway.

Nadia, Mateo's mom
